Lynley was the daughter of an Irish father and her New England mother. Her career began as a model for children before taking up acting. Her nomination for the Theatre World Award for "one of the most promising stars 1956-57" for her role in The Potting Shed. Lynley began her film career with The Light in the Forest, a Disney film The Light in the Forest The Light in the Forest, following by Holiday for Lovers (1959) and Blue Denim (1959). She was nominated in the year 1959 for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer - Female. In the following year she was again nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer Female for the film Blue Denim.
